This book provides a more compact treatment of much the same subject matter as The Selling of the South. In fact, I wish I had read it before reading Cobb's later book.
The first chapter, The Shaping of Southern Growth, provides some background information not addressed in Selling. It discusses the course of Southern industrialization during the period between the Civil War and the Great Depression.
