Things are even better than I thought

I was at the library yesterday. Among other bits of information, I needed to find out the sizes of state legislatures in the early 20th century. I was looking at almanacs from the early 1900s. Most of them had 15 or 20 pages of ads in the front, which were pretty interesting.

Many of the ads were for patent medicines and new fangled technological marvels like mechanical typewriting machines.

There were also numerous ads for hernia trusses. I guess people had to do a lot of heavy lifting back then.

What really struck me was the number of ads for artificial limb companies. There were several. How common must dismemberment have been in my great-grandfathers' time that wooden leg distributors found it profitable to advertise in periodicals?

I am so happy to be alive now, rather than then.
