As it turned out, I wasn't entirely displeased with the first debate. While both candidates obviously had their talking points, the evening wasn't completely stripped of meaning by a reliance on one-line insults. Perhaps both candidates' camps decided that the subject matter was far too grim to be trivialized in this way.
In any case, I still feel that the presidential debates, if they're to remain fixtures of our political process, need to be be changed, hopefully along the lines I suggested.
